In August 2012 Mike Mayberry and Stuart Yendle sea kayaked out to the Smalls Lighthouse, the most isolated of all the Trinity Lighthouses. This trip was first completed by a team led by Nigel Foster in 1984 and it hadn’t been done in the 28 years since. A few had tried but not made it there, reaching either Grassholm instead or turning back. It has only been done once since.
The trip out to the Smalls Lighthouse was published in the April 2013 edition of Canoe Focus. Canoe Focus is the official magazine of the British Canoe Union.
“Don’t think I have ever heard you wax quite so lyrical about a trip before.
You obviously love what you are doing.
Do it while you can until your bladder gives out!!” – Mike Thacker
What an adventure! I am not brave enough to take to the sea at this point. Still a newbie kayaker, I like to stick to calm waters (lakes or very calm rivers)…I’m sure I’ll get braver with more experience, but for now I’m enjoying the journey! ~Norma Maxwell
